What’s driving mattress sales in this down economy?
Still kvetching about your back? Someone call the whambulance because America has moved on. The best reason to buy a new mattress is suddenly much sexier, according the Chicago Sun Times.
A random telephone survey by Harris Interactive found that 1/3 of respondents would buy a new mattress if they believed it would spice up their sex lives. The survey, conducted between January 8-11, 2010, involved 1, 043 random participants.

While sex had the biggest response (shocking isn’t it?) it’s not the only reason for getting a new mattress. More than 10% blame their mattress for snapping at their boss and secretly napping at work. Wonder how that would go over after a wigout with the boss. “My apologies, sir but my mattress made me do it…”
While the survey results don’t surprise us, it’s refreshing to see folks connecting their health to what they’re sleeping on. Sleep, like diet and exercise is an important part of the good-health equation – but it’s often forgotten.
Is your mattress coming between you and what you really want to do at night? Sleep or otherwise? Consider these ideas:
- More than 25% of Americans say their partner’s sleep habits disrupt their sleep.
- More than 10% of married Americans sleep alone because their partner disrupts their sleep.
- Statistically men sleep less than women, but women complain more of being sleep deprived.
- Reduced productivity from tired employees costs business more than $50 billion dollars a year.
- 2 out of 10 people admit to making mistakes at work because of lack of sleep
- More than 70% of Americans admit to driving drowsy in the past year, while 40% admit to actually falling asleep behind the wheel.
When you’re ready to buy a new mattress, think about how your current one is letting you down. Whether it’s sex, tossing and turning or a spring poking you in the middle of the back, your new mattress should solve current sleep complaints.
Do you struggle with sleep deprivation? Do you believe a new mattress could solve your sleep challenges?
