Sleep & creativity: the science
When you’re sleeping, your mind is busily sorting, assessing and storing the thoughts, ideas, images and feelings you’ve accumulated throughout the day. It’s creating the pathways that link and organize this information for the future.
A steady stream of research has shown that sleep, REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep in particular, is critical to creative problem solving. One recent study from the University of California shows that REM sleep allows our minds to solve problems with greater creativity. It suggests that when you’re in REM sleep your mind is more fluid and flexible than when you’re awake. It allows you to “make new and useful associations between unrelated ideas” – connections your waking mind might dismiss.
In other words, dreaming allows you to think outside of the box, and the answers you come up with could be revolutionary.
