Creating a safe sleep environment for baby
Another crib recall puts the health and safety of our infants and toddlers top of mind. This morning’s recall from Dorel comes fast on the heels on November’s recall by Stork – the largest crib recall in history.
In November, ASTM International passed new safety standards for cribs that no longer contain provisions that allow movable rails. This will result in a wholesale ban of drop-side cribs in Canada and elsewhere.

Dorel Recall: The details
More than 600,000 cribs have been recalled because they posed a suffocation and strangulation hazard to babies. Another case of side bars that don’t hold. Sold at retailers such as K-Mart, Sears and Wal-Mart between January 2005 and December 2009, Dorel is offering a repair kit and asking consumers not to use the crib until it is received and installed.
Sleep health & safety: the Natura approach
Even if your baby’s crib isn’t affected by the recall, now’s a good time to do a safety sweep of the nursery.
Natura’s baby mattresses are designed to fit snugly in a standard size crib, protecting your child against slipping between mattress and crib bars. All of our baby products (and our products in general) are manufactured with natural and organic components to eliminate exposure to chemicals, toxins and off-gassing.
Some things we consider when designing baby products:
- Keep it chemical free: Babies can’t process chemicals as quickly or efficiently as adults, yet they sleep up to 18 hours a day for the first 2 years of life. A healthy sleep environment is critical.
- Control humidity and temperature: All-natural, highly breathable fabrics like cotton and wool are proven to help babies cry less and eliminate the risks associated with overheating.
- Consider the environment: All of our wood products are bought from suppliers who adhere to sustainable wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.
- Monitor health and safety news: As knowledge grows, products and approach can evolve to provide true and lasting value to our customers.
