Call him quirky, but Ed Begley Jr.’s devotion to green living can’t be questioned. This A-list celebrity invited us to follow his quest for an eco-extreme lifestyle in his reality TV series, Living with Ed, and his devotion inspires us to increase our own humble efforts for a healthier world.

Leading the way with X-treme Green

It’s not just the modest (1500 square foot) dwelling Ed call’s home, or the fact that he’s installed both solar panels and wind turbines to power it. It’s not even the electric Toyota Rav 4 that he drives (when he can’t take his bike or catch a bus). Or the sun warmed water he uses for his thirty second showers. It’s the little things, like the bicycle powered toaster and the fence made of recycled milk jugs that prove that when it comes to living green comic actor Ed Begley Jr. means business.

Looking for the next step forward

Begley Jr.’s environmental odyssey began in the early 1970’s with his first electric vehicle (a modified Taylor-Gunn golf cart) and plucking what he calls ‘the low hanging fruit’ (putting in a new thermostat, resealing the fridge, turning off the heated dry cycle on the dishwasher). Since his humble beginnings, Ed has consistently upped the enviro-anti, adding insulation, solar power, wind power, more insulation, etc, etc, etc. By challenging his friend and fellow environmentalist Bill Nye (‘the Science Guy’) to a lowest carbon footprint contest it seems Begley Jr’s eco-journey is far from over.
