First clown in space!
When Guy Laliberté, billionaire founder of Cirque du Soleil, purchased a ticket for the September 30th 2009 flight to the International Space Station he wasn’t just booking a pleasure tour. While his feet weren’t on solid ground, his head was anything but in the stars.
Laliberté, the self-proclaimed ‘first clown in space’, transformed this personal voyage into an orbital extravaganza rivalling the Live Aide phenomenon of 1985. This ‘Poetic Social Mission’ circled the globe Friday night, calling on us to take action in defence of our most precious global resource: water.

“Moving Stars and Earth for Water” global all-star line-up
“Moving Stars and Earth for Water” was an eclectic blend of all things creative. Laliberté, broadcasting live from the International Space Station, served as the event host and shared amateure videos from his days aboard the space station.
“What the Drop of Water Had to Say,” a 14-stanza poem written by Canadian author Yann Martel, set the tone for the event. As it traveled from Montreal to Tokyo, Rio to Johannesburg, different celebrity hosts took turns reciting stanzas. Peter Gabriel, Salma Hayek, Shakira, Al Gore, Matthew McConaughey David Suzuki, Bono and the list goes on, and on!
Water conservation efforts are out of this world!
Over consumption, drought and desertification pose a triple threat to the world’s waters supply, yet the impact of this critical environmental issue remains underestimated in many parts of the world.
“We were brought up with this idea of abundance in our head, that water was an inexhaustible resource,” Laliberté said. “But it’s not the reality. It’s not the case.” His quest to promote wise water usage spawned the One Drop Foundation, a sponsor of the “Moving Stars and Earth for Water” event. This organization will continue working to ensure that everyone from across the globe has access to clean water.

He may have increased his carbon footprint to a big butt print with this stunt – but he sure got the message across. It’s a cause worth talking about.
Great info. Thanks for posting this.
