Eco Celebrity Beat: Jessica Biel Summits Kilimanjaro

Summit on the Summit

Global warming may be the enviro-concern de jour, but sadly, it’s not the only dire issue we face. Across the globe, particularly in third world countries, clean water is a scarce commodity and people are suffering for lack of it. For Jessica Biel, sultry starlet from The Illusionist, going green means stepping up to a tough challenge in support of the environment.

Jessica’s all-star co-climbers

Guy Laliberté may have moved Stars and Earth for Water last fall, but for Jessica, Emile Hirsch and a slew of other notables it’s all about moving mountains (or up a mountain) in support of the environment.

Jessica and Emile were the headliners, but the trekking team was super high-watt, including musician Kenna, Isabel Lucas, Alexandria Cousteau (daughter of famed explorer Jacques Cousteau), Elizabeth Gore (Yep, former VP and enviro-activist Al Gore’s progeny) and rappers Lupe Fiasco and Santigold.

A ReGrooven8-ing trek

Trekking up Kilimanjaro is no easy feat, but the result is 100% ReGrooven8 -ing. The team faced days of bone chilling cold (hope they packed some Natura-style woollies to stay warm), altitude sickness and a final weary, midnight march to the summit. After a six day climb they reached Africa’s highest peak on January 12, 2010.

The toughest challenges bring the greatest rewards. We understand that at Natura. For fifteen years we’ve been on a trek of our own, taking the lead with steady, measured steps toward a more natural, environmentally conscious industry. The successes have been awe-inspiring and well worth the climb and just like Jessica and her Kilimanjaro team – the view is awesome from here.

Global Clean Water – Growing Crisis

Jessica and her crew created Summit on the Summit to spread the word on the clean water crisis. Estimates say as many as 884 million people have inadequate access to safe drinking water and that more than 2 billion people have insufficient water resources for waste disposal and sewage. Some argue that 80% of disease worldwide is caused by unsafe drinking water, poor hygiene and inadequate sanitation.

The Summit on the Summit’s stated mission was to raising awareness and funds for The Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and Water For People’s Playpump Technology. Mission accomplished.

For tackling a tough task in support of the environment we salute Jessica Biel, Emile Hirsch and the Summit on the Summit team in this week’s Eco Celebrity Beat.
