(Dare we say it?!?) Enviro Demi-God
From a solar-paneled house and hybrid car to his uber-active role in spreading eco-consciousness, this Eco-Celeb is an Enviro- superstar. Passing up megastar privileges (like flying in chartered jets) he opts to sit with us on commercial flights, cutting down his carbon footprint. But that’s not the only reason we love our Leo.
Eco-activist & Producer

“I wanted to take the position of a concerned citizen of the world,”
– Leonardo DiCaprio
From hosting the US leg of Live Earth, to making the 2007 announcement that the OSCARS were going green, if its enviro-news you can bet Leo will be there. Writer, producer and narrator of 11th Hour, a film that followed Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth, Leo doesn’t claim to have all the answers. But he uses his celebrity status to spread the word.
Di Capri delivers emotionally charged calls to action in projects and events around the world. The website, 11th Hour Action, offers encouragement, advice and a place to share ideas, helping generation now embracing environmental living.
His megastar appeal to budding environmentalists was demonstrated when Nickelodeon’s named him the first recipient their Big Green Help Award.
Aside from 11th Hour, Leo’s production credits include the short documentaries Water Planet and Global Warming and the Discovery Channel’s Greensburg. This docu-reality show follows the rebuilding of the Kansas town destroyed by an EF5 tornado on May 4, 2007. Greensburg serves as a model of intelligent, eco-design.
Eco-Leadership, Leo-style.
The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation aligns itself with the Natural Resources Defense Council, (Leo’s on the board of trustees), Global Green USA, (he’s a board member), the International Fund for Animal Welfare (he’s on the honorary board of directors). The California Community Foundation even renamed itself to capitalize on the Leo-clout.
Enviro Lifestyle
The clean, green Leo machine lives in the cutting edge, sustainable condo complex Riverhouse on the Hudson River. Armed with solar panels, an in-house water treatment facility, a fresh filtered air system, low-emission paints, vegetation covered rooftops and even a bicycle parking lot, Riverhouse is the crème de la crème of eco-chic living.
In 2000 he bought Blackadore Caye, a 104-acre lot in Belize, and plans to turn it into an eco-friendly resort.
We salute this week’s Eco-Celebrity, Leonardo DiCaprio for inspiring us, challenging us and calling us to action.
