The Prince of Green
Purple may be the color of royalty but beneath the velvet cloak and golden orb Prince Charles is pure, down to earth green. From starting an organic garden at Highgrove to spreading the word on climate change and sustainability, this royal crusader’s involvement in the environmental movement began long before it was a cause célèbre.
Organic gardening
Prince Charles purchased Highgrove estate in 1980 with the vision of creating an entirely organic garden and farm. Highgrove Garden boasts a walled kitchen garden, an orchard, a meadow with 32 varieties of endangered native plant. While the Highgrove Home Farm produces organic mutton, hosts a vegetable box program and rare bird trust, and is the home of Duchy Originals (an organic line of products from garden furniture to cookies and jams).
Carbon footprint reduction
In December 2006 the Prince of Wales announced his intention to reduce the carbon footprint of his household by opting for more eco-friendly travel arrangement – not an easy task given his royal retinue of security guards and the number of appearances he is required to make across the globe annually.
Princely projects for environmental protection
Bonnie Prince Charlie lends his name and noble intentions to a plethora of eco-friendly organizations including:
- The Prince’s Rainforest Project (to slow deforestation rates in rainforest countries and raise awareness of the link between rainforest and climate change)
- The Prince of Wales’s Business & the Environment Programme (seeking the integration of sustainable practices within business)
- The Prince’s May Day Network, (encouraging businesses to take action on climate change)
- Business in the Community (promoting community responsibility by business leaders) just to name a few.
Natura’s green commitment
Like the Prince of Wales, our commitment to the environment began long before it was popular, and we’ve been in full pursuit of our organic and natural vision ever since. And like His Royal Highness, sustainability and eco-friendly business practices are foremost on our minds.
From our mission statement to the factory floor, sustainable, earth-friendly manufacturing practices and materials play a vital part in what we do and who we are. Our green initiatives list grows at our monthly Opportunities for Improvement meetings, and our ever-expanding product lines seek out new ways to supply the growing desire for green, at all economic levels.
For leading the charge in the environmental crusade, we dub thee, Prince Charles, the Prince of Green in our Eco Celebrity Beat.
