Georgia shares her new mattress joy with the world
In April we held a contest on Facebook, inviting our fans to post a picture of their old and tired mattresses – for a chance to win an organic mattress – FREE. The response was overwhelming.
Below is a letter our winner, Georgia Dawes, sent to us to express her gratitude…
I have been in desperate need of a good bed for at least 2 years now. In October 2007, my already-damaged lower back suffered a severe injury. My finances were very limited, and I really did not know what type of bed would be best.
I tried to fix my old bed by adding a thin foam. Princess and the Pea bed, I called it. Now my hips were hurting so much that I was waking up regularly crying “ouch ouch ouch ouch” from the pain.
I went to a couple of mattress stores to try out mattress sets, but they didn’t feel comfortable and were way beyond my price range. My back and hips were getting worse, and I almost never got a decent night’s sleep.
Then one miraculous day in early April 2009, I saw a tiny notice in the Boston Metro newspaper: “Would you like to win a Natura EcoHaven mattress for Earth Day? Enter online at facebook.”
When I saw the amazing mattresses, with organic materials and wonderful testimonials, I thought, “Maybe this would be exactly what I need for my poor back and hips.” But a second later, I thought, “Oh, there’s no point in entering this contest—a thousand people will do the same.”
A few days before Earth Day, I took some photos of my sad Princess and the Pea bed, and posted it on Natura’s Facebook site. I had no expectations of winning at all, but that nagging little voice would not shut up until I tried. So I did.
I was so sure that I would not win that I would not have checked my email (and facebook messages) on April 23rd, had I not been expecting email from a potential roommate. I saw a message from a Julia Rosien. I nearly fell over—Julia was telling me that I had WON this AMAZING mattress set. I could not believe it. I danced around whooped and hollered. Then I thought, wait, maybe there is some mistake.
So I double-checked via facebook, and sure enough, I had won! I was (and still am) in a daze, shocked and so happy! It just seemed like the most amazing dream!
On May 12th, the wonderful mattress set (a queen-sized EcoHaven mattress, wool-filled topper and support base) arrived at my house. I was intimidated by this amazing mattress at first and kept my old futon leaning on the wall in the hallway for about 5 days, just in case.

The first thing I noticed, the very first night I slept on it, was that my hips felt MUCH better. I actually did not wake up in pain 4 or 5 times a night (which I had been doing regularly for at least a year). Then a few days later, I noticed that my back felt much less stiff in the morning.
My body felt supported, but not aggressively. I did not sink down into a soft spongy spring-supported mattress, or have to fight with an overly “firm” one. Instead, I felt cradled in comfort.
It never occurred to me that I might have been having allergic reactions to any of the materials from my previous bed, but I frequently woke up with breathing problems. I would feel like I had to catch my breath (almost an asthma-like reaction). I always attributed this to stress, but now I think maybe it was allergies. This has almost entirely ceased now.
Just recently, I had some very deep expansive dreams. This is not a “side effect” of the EcoHaven mattress I would have anticipated. But when it happened, I realized that, in the past (ten years ago?) I used to have amazing, expansive, extremely visual, intense, almost visionary dreams. But without my knowing it, they had tapered off. In the past few weeks, I have had a few of these dreams, much to my utter delight and amazement. You know the type—out in some huge landscape with winds blowing and sky billowing above? I love those dreams. They are so important to my psyche, but I had not had any for some time.
I am convinced this mattress has healing qualities on a very deep level. I still have some restless nights (menopause will do that to you) and my back and hip problems have not disappeared, although they are MUCH improved. Yoga and relaxation, diet and exercise are also key to helping hip and back problems—and I’m working on it.
But the EcoHaven mattress has made a HUGE difference! Just to sleep without waking up 6 times crying “Ouch!” because my hips are killing me…what a gift! My back is no longer stiff when I get up in the morning, and it feels less fragile, stronger. My knees and legs feel better, too.
Thank you so much, Natura!!!! I hope my words have expressed at least a little of my gratitude for this amazing gift. Winning this wonderful mattress has really made a huge difference in my life, on so many levels.
This has been such an remarkable, multi-faceted blessing! Please give all my best wishes to everyone at Natura World.
