Natural and organic are not the same thing…
Like Hoover campaigned for a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage, Natura believes in the possibility of an organic mattress in every bedroom. Buying organic reduces your exposure to chemicals and has the potential to improve your day-to-day and long-term health.
But what’s the difference between an organic mattress and a natural one? Natural is always a hands-down healthier choice than synthetic, but even natural can be improved upon.
Did you know?
- 3% of global farmlands grow cotton, but employ 25% of the world’s insecticides
- Cotton is one of the most pesticide-dependent crops in the US – only tobacco and coffee consume more agri-chemicals worldwide
- More than 8,000 chemicals are used in during the growing, processing and manufacturing of cotton (including 5 of the top 9 pesticides known to cause cancer (cyanide, dicofol, naled, propargite and trifluralin)
During the conversion of conventional cotton into fabric, silicone waxes, petroleum scours, softeners, brighteners, heavy metals, flame and soil retardants, ammonia and formaldehyde may be added at various stages.
Organic cotton
Organic cotton tells a story based on what others say about it. A company can say a product is organic, but the proof is in adherence to third-party standards and their focus on environmental, social and human health.
To be labeled organic, cotton must start its life on a farm that’s been certified free from pesticides, herbicides and cytotoxins for at least 3 years. It must have stemmed from natural cotton seeds, not genetically modified seeds.
The only certifications that matter are the ones given by boards and governances that regularly inspect and certify farms based on strict regulations.
Did you know?
- Organic farms consume 50% less fossil fuels than conventional farms (on average)
- One acre of organic farmland can absorb 3500 lbs. of CO2 per year (a known greenhouse gas)
- Organic farming methods improve soil fertility by using irrigation and pest control
- Workers on organic farms are not exposed to cancer-causing chemicals and groundwater systems are likewise protected

As long as the bed is comfortable, going green or organic makes perfect sense. Of course, you don’t want to sleep on something that feels like a bed of rocks, but if it gives you a good sleep, why not?
