How moisture affects your comfort during sleep
Ever notice how two people who share the same bed can feel very different about the temperature within it? The “He’s hot, I’m not” complaint is as old as the toilet seat argument. It’s no surprise that we all perceive temperature differently. Consider these stats:
- 50 F (10C) – Canadians plant gardens, but New Yorkers turn on the heat.
- 41 F (5C) – Californians reach for their woollies, while Canadians head outside for their first Frisbee game of the year.
- 32 F (0C) – Most Italian cars won’t start, while most Canadians roll down the windows to let in the fresh air.
- -4 F (-20C) – Canadians fire up the barbeque for the last time before winter settles in. New York City landlords turn on the heat.
While your perception of temperature has a lot to do with environment, how your body regulates temperature is simple science – especially in bed.
Your body uses moisture to cool and warm you, and most adults lose a full pint of moisture each night in bed, through breathing and natural perspiration. If that moisture evaporates, your body can maintain a comfortable temperature. If it’s trapped, you’ll overheat or feel chilled – which leads to more moisture loss and/or goose bumps.
Imagine how hard your body works in an environment where moisture can’t escape – your system never gets a break. It’s no wonder that simple temperature control can radically improve the quality of your sleep.
This is where wool comes in.
Unlike synthetic fibers that absorb or repel moisture, wool absorbs it through the core of each fiber and then releases it back to the environment. It’s like a mini-air-conditioning unit that’s constantly processing moisture and air.
Pioneers used wool blankets to prevent water from pooling on the surface of ice (which kept it frozen longer), and your grandfather probably wore his Sunday (wool) suit in the heat of summer, as well as on the coldest days of winter.
Without temperature fluctuations, heart rate slows naturally. Simple science that even the most high-tech materials can’t match.
The wool we use at Natura is a smart, intuitive bed partner that works hard so you can rest. Isn’t it time you started sleeping well?
