Can you tweet your way to finding stuff online?
Unless you’ve been living in a vacuum for the last 6 months you’ve heard of Twitter. Everyone from Ashton Kutcher to Oprah to CNN is on it and using it in a variety of ways. Even if you’re not a digital native, getting into the conversation isn’t as complicated as you may think. And the rewards are pretty phenomenal.
Ever stood around the coffee maker chatting about your kids, the weekend and maybe your new favorite restaurant you can’t wait to visit again? People who frequent sites like Facebook and Twitter are the same thing – only digitally.

The big difference is the number of people they reach with their conversations – and the information at their fingertips. If you’re researching an upcoming purchase online, Twitter is a great tool for finding brands you may not have considered otherwise. What’s more, you’ll get honest appraisals and advice.
If you don’t have a Twitter account, signing up is simple. To start finding like-minded people you want to add to your community, use Twitter Search (search.twitter.com) and use keywords such as your location, activities you enjoy or career-related terms. And then start chatting with folks – remember to use @ before their name so they know you’re talking to them.
Pretty soon you’ll be thick into all sorts of conversations. Just remember that digital conversations require the same social courtesies as face to face relationships:
- Contribute relevant information and ask intelligent questions.
- Share valuable information and links – others might find it useful as well.
- Play nice – there’s no room here for mean-spiritedness of any kind.
- Humor is always appropriate – but sarcasm is easy to misinterpret online.
- If someone frustrates or annoys you, unfollow them and/or don’t respond – arguments online are permanently catalogued.
