Natura’s (not so) secret passion
You’ve heard the rumours and noticed the signs – and we’re ready to confess. It’s true. Natura has a love affair with wool. Deliciously cosy, multi-talented, uber-healthy WOOL. This is one obsession that’s bound to be life-long.

Wool: the bare facts
What makes wool so special? Let us count the ways!
- This natural fibre is one of nature’s best, most efficient temperature regulators.
- Wool is hygroscopic. It can take in up to 30% of its own weight without feeling damp, and it processes that moisture, drawing it in and releasing it back out into the environment.
- Wool is naturally flame resistant; it ignites at a higher temperature, has a lower rate of flame spread, low heat release and doesn’t melt or drip; and it chars – which makes it insulating, self-extinguishing and shed less toxic gases and smoke.
- The crimped shape of a wool fibre lends greater bulk to wool fabrics which gives them superior buffering power
Wool: are all wools created equal?
Definitely not. The quality of wool depends the species of sheep, the health of the animal it’s harvested from and the processing methods used to turn fibre to fabric.
And wool is such a durable fibre that it is often re-used. Honestly! Many manufacturers purchase re-cycled wool fabrics for use in their products – wool taken from yarn, old clothes and wool blankets. When you read a label that says “Virgin Wool” you know that you are purchasing a wool fabric that’s doesn’t come from recycled wool.

Natura’s wool story: it’s all about our standards
Natura purchases the wool for our wool-lined mattresses, wool pillows and wool bedding from New Zealand. Our sheep graze on wide, green tracts of farmland and are manually sheared twice a year.
- We don’t buy from farmers who use chemicals in their sheering process (slipe wool) or schedule their sheep for butchering.
- We only buy wool from Romney sheep, which have coarser wool and are not susceptible to parasites that plague other varieties.
- We purchase wool for our organic wool products from farms that have been certified.
- We receive the raw wool at our factory and process it ourselves.
When you purchase wool bedding products from Natura rest assured that we know exactly how it’s been turned from raw wool to the batting, fill or lining that we put in your bed. And now, so do you.

This was a really great post. I have a rug made of Romney wool – was told this type of wool is more durable and suitable for rugs. I’ve had it for a few years now and it still looks like new. I’ve been transforming my apartment to all organic furniture little by little.
