Sleep Studies – Show Me the Proof!

Sleeping isn’t for sissies. Doing it well involves a safe place to lay your head, following a routine and understanding how much sleep your body needs to stay healthy. But it’s also about what you’re sleeping on.

Third-party studies

If you’re chasing a better night’s sleep, you know that a sales pitch isn’t going to cut it.

At Natura, we believe that science is the best proof a product works. A salesperson can help you find a comfortable mattress, but understanding why one mattress is better for your health than another will help you make the right decision for you.

When we first started making beds in 1994, we knew certain components make a sleep environment healthy. Wool, for example, helps regulate body temperature by naturally drawing moisture away from your skin. And because you’re not struggling to stay warm (or cool down) your heart can relax, which allows you to find deeper, healing sleep.

If you want proof you’re making the right mattress choice, don’t take our word for it. The Medical Journal of Australia, the Canadian Chiropractic Association, the Archives of Environmental Health and the Woolmark Company have all released studies based on real life tests.

This research study watched subjects sleeping on wool and measured their movements throughout the night. They found that people who slept on wool moved less and went for longer periods without any movement than people who slept on a synthetic surface.

Researchers agree the wool had a positive effect not on the cause.

  • Wool is known to buffer pressure points, so reduced movement could be because healthy circulation is supported more fully with wool.
  •  Wool wicks away moisture, so a temperature-regulated bed could mean that sleepers were better able to relax.
Babies sleeping on wool
The study cites another research investigation that shows infants fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer when they’re sleeping on wool – which supports healthy growth. You know that temperature fluctuations can disrupt your sleep, making you toss and turn. This study discusses weight gain in low birth-weight babies and how sleeping on wool can improve their chances.

Woolmark Company Study

This study compared sleepers using wool-filled and synthetic-filled quilts. Not surprisingly, they found that the people who slept under a wool blanket moved less throughout the night. But they also measured heart rate and under-the-covers humidity.

People who slept under wool-filled blankets enjoyed 71% less humidity, which obviously provided a more comfortable sleeping environment. And it also seems to have affected their heart rates (which were also lower).

Canadian Chiropractic Association

A study conducted at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Ontario, Canada found that 93% of the chronic back pain sufferers who slept on a Natura slat mattress for one month noticed significant pain reduction. Natura mattresses are the first brand to be recognized by the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.

Archives of Environmental Health

Four different brands of crib mattresses were tested with mice to determine if VOC’s emitted affected respiratory airflow and irritation. The mice were exposed to the mattresses for a set time period each day and their breaths analyzed for chemicals.

Researchers concluded that some mattresses do emit chemicals that are ingested and can cause acute toxic effects on the respiratory system. Several of the chemicals used in common crib mattresses were identified as known irritants to human respiratory tracts that can exacerbate asthma.
